What Are APK and RPK Files?
APK file
An APK is the Android application package used to install the game. It normally contains the application code, launcher icon, permissions, libraries, and the basic files required to start the app.
For large games, the APK may contain only the program itself. Images, animations, music, voices, videos, scripts, and other resources may be distributed separately to keep the installer smaller.
RPK file
An RPK file is generally used as a packaged collection of game resources. Depending on the game or Android port, it may contain:
- Character images and backgrounds
- Animations and video files
- Music, voices, and sound effects
- Game scripts and dialogue
- Maps, models, and other assets
RPK is not one universal Android format. Different developers and porters may use the same extension for different resource packages. The correct folder therefore depends on the specific game. Always follow the path supplied with the download whenever one is available.
Which Files Do You Need to Download?
When a download page provides both an APK and an RPK or asset package, you will normally need both files.
| File | Purpose | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| GameName.apk | Installs the Android application | Yes |
| GameName.rpk | Contains the main game resources | Usually yes |
| Assets.zip or Data.zip | May contain the RPK file or a complete data folder | When provided |
| Patch or update file | Adds optional fixes or newer content | Only when instructed |
Installing the APK alone may create the game folder, but the application may not run until the separate resource file has been copied to the expected location.
Before You Begin
Prepare the following before starting:
- The correct APK and RPK files for the same game version
- A file manager capable of extracting ZIP or RAR archives
- Enough free storage for both the download and extracted files
- Permission to install apps from the browser or file manager you are using
- A backup of any existing saves when updating an installed game
Important: Download APK files only from sources you trust. An APK can contain executable code, so scanning the file before installation is strongly recommended.
How to Install APK + RPK Files on Android
Step 1: Download both files
Download the APK and the matching RPK or game-assets archive. Check that both files belong to the same release. Mixing an APK from one version with assets from another can cause crashes, missing images, script errors, or an endless loading screen.
A typical download may look like this:
GameName-v1.0.apk
GameName-v1.0.rpk
Or the asset file may arrive inside an archive:
GameName-v1.0.apk
GameName-Assets-v1.0.zip
Step 2: Extract the asset archive
If the game assets are compressed as ZIP, RAR, or 7Z, extract the archive first. Do not simply rename the compressed file to .rpk.
After extraction, you may see:
GameName.rpk
Or a complete folder structure such as:
com.developer.gamename/
└── files/
└── GameName.rpk
When the archive already contains a complete folder structure, preserve that structure instead of moving only the RPK file.
Step 3: Allow installation from the current source
Open the APK. Android may ask you to allow installations from the browser, download manager, or file manager that opened it.
Enable the permission only for the app you are currently using, install the APK, and disable the permission again afterward if you do not regularly sideload applications.
Step 4: Install the APK
Install the APK but do not begin playing immediately. In many cases, launching the application once helps Android create its required data directory.
- Install the APK.
- Open the game once.
- Grant any legitimate storage permission it requests.
- Close the game completely.
If the game displays a missing-assets message during this first launch, that is expected when the data file has not yet been copied.
Step 5: Find the required destination folder
The exact destination differs between games. Common locations include:
Internal storage/Android/data/package.name/files/
Internal storage/Android/data/package.name/files/game/
Internal storage/Android/obb/package.name/
Internal storage/GameName/
Internal storage/Download/GameName/
The text package.name is a placeholder. A real folder may look like:
Android/data/com.developer.gamename/files/
Do not guess the destination when the download provides a specific path. Copy the file to the exact folder stated by the developer, porter, or download page.
Step 6: Copy the RPK file or asset folder
Move or copy the extracted RPK file into the required destination. Make sure the filename remains unchanged unless the instructions explicitly tell you to rename it.
For example:
Internal storage/
└── Android/
└── data/
└── com.developer.gamename/
└── files/
└── GameName.rpk
If your archive contains several files or subfolders, copy all of them while preserving their original folder structure.
Step 7: Launch the game
Open the application after the transfer is complete. The first launch may take longer than usual while the game verifies, indexes, or extracts its resources.
Avoid closing the game immediately unless it remains unresponsive for several minutes.
Installing RPK Files on Android 11, 12, 13, 14, and Newer
Modern Android versions restrict access to folders inside Android/data and Android/obb. This storage protection is known as scoped storage.
Depending on your phone, the default file manager may prevent you from opening or modifying these directories. Possible solutions include:
- Using the device manufacturer’s built-in Files application
- Using Android’s system document picker when the file manager requests folder access
- Connecting the phone to a computer with a USB cable
- Using a reputable file manager that supports the Storage Access Framework
- Allowing the game to import the asset file itself, when that option is available
Do not grant unrestricted storage access to an unknown file-management application. Use a trusted tool and grant only the minimum access needed to complete the transfer.
Alternative Installation Method Using a Computer
If your phone prevents access to Android/data, transferring the assets from a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer may be easier.
- Connect the Android device to the computer using USB.
- Unlock the phone.
- Select File Transfer or MTP mode.
- Open the device storage on the computer.
- Navigate to the required data folder.
- Copy the RPK file or complete asset folder.
- Safely disconnect the device.
- Launch the game.
Some phones may still restrict these folders over USB. In that case, use the installation method specifically recommended by the game porter.
How to Update an APK + RPK Game
Updating requires additional care because the APK, asset file, and saved data may all belong to a specific version.
- Back up your save files.
- Keep the currently working APK and RPK until the update is verified.
- Download the new APK and matching new asset package.
- Read the update notes for save-compatibility information.
- Install the new APK over the existing app when signatures match.
- Replace the old RPK only when the instructions require it.
- Launch the game and test your latest save.
Do not delete the older installation until the new version launches correctly and recognizes your saves.

Common Problems and Solutions
The game shows a black screen
A black screen often indicates that the application cannot locate its resources. Confirm that:
- The RPK file has finished downloading
- The asset archive was fully extracted
- The RPK is in the correct folder
- The APK and RPK belong to the same version
- The filename has not been changed
The game says “assets not found”
This usually means the resource file is missing or stored in the wrong directory. Recheck the package folder and the path supplied with the download.
Watch for accidental duplicate folders such as:
Android/data/com.game/com.game/files/
The correct structure may instead be:
Android/data/com.game/files/
The APK will not install
Possible causes include:
- Insufficient free storage
- An older copy signed with a different certificate
- An APK built for an incompatible Android version or CPU architecture
- A damaged or incomplete download
- Installation permission not enabled for the current source
If Android reports a package conflict, back up your saves before uninstalling the previous build.
The game closes immediately
An immediate crash may be caused by incompatible assets, a missing resource package, insufficient memory, or an unsupported device. Restart the phone, confirm the files match, and check whether the game has minimum Android or RAM requirements.
The RPK file keeps opening as an unknown file
You normally do not need to open the RPK manually. It should be copied intact to the directory expected by the game. Android may correctly display it as an unknown file type.
The game cannot access Android/data
This is common on newer Android versions. Use the system document picker, a trusted compatible file manager, USB file transfer, or the game’s own asset importer when available.
The download has several RPK files
Some games divide resources into multiple packages. Copy all required files into the same destination while preserving their original names and directory structure.
APK + RPK vs APK + OBB
| Package Type | Typical Destination | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| APK only | Installed directly | All required resources may already be inside the APK |
| APK + RPK | Game-specific data folder | The destination depends on the developer or porter |
| APK + OBB | Android/obb/package.name/ | Uses an Android expansion-data structure |
| APK + Assets ZIP | Android/data, Android/obb, or a custom folder | Extract the archive before copying unless instructed otherwise |
Important Safety Tips
- Download the APK and assets from the same release page.
- Do not mix files from different versions or porters.
- Scan APK files before installation.
- Do not disable Android security features permanently.
- Do not grant broad file access to unknown applications.
- Keep enough free storage for extraction and installation.
- Back up saves before updating or uninstalling.
- Retain the working older version until the replacement is tested.
