What is xxxFiles?

xxxFiles is a sandbox-style visual novel by Caine.Totally.Sane featuring a shapeshifting protagonist. Progress involves different identities, locations, character stories, objectives, choices and persistent story flags.

Who developed xxxFiles?

xxxFiles is developed by Caine.Totally.Sane.

Can the protagonist shapeshift?

Yes. Shapeshifting is one of the defining mechanics of xxxFiles. The protagonist can use different forms for different situations rather than remaining in a single identity throughout the story.

What are the different forms used for?

Different forms can support different parts of the story and provide access to particular situations. Hiroshi is used as a more general form, while Ken has a specific role connected to infiltrating the School area.

Is xxxFiles a sandbox game?

xxxFiles uses sandbox-style progression. Players work through objectives by interacting with characters, visiting locations, obtaining required items and sometimes advancing the day before another event becomes available.

How do I know what to do next in xxxFiles?

Check the Stats screen for main objectives. If you are trying to progress with a particular character, check that character’s screen for available story hints.

Why is a character event not appearing?

Check whether you have completed the previous interaction, selected the appropriate protagonist form, obtained any required item and reached the correct location or time. Some events may also depend on an earlier choice or persistent character state.

Do choices matter in xxxFiles?

Yes. Important decisions can create persistent story flags. Branches may eventually reconnect, but those flags can continue changing later dialogue and event variations.

Does xxxFiles have completely separate character routes?

Not necessarily. Some branches separate temporarily and later reconnect. Important character states can remain active after that point, allowing earlier decisions to influence later shared events without requiring completely separate versions of the entire story.

What are the GOOD and EVIL character states?

The developer has used Riko as an example of persistent branching states. Earlier choices can place her into different story states, and those states can later change how she behaves when she appears in another character’s storyline.

Do items matter for progression?

Yes. Some objectives require the player to first learn information from a character and then obtain an appropriate item. For example, one developer-provided progression example requires learning Katsumi’s preference before buying the relevant item and returning at the appropriate time.

Does xxxFiles have a gallery?

Yes. The game includes a gallery, and some entries are associated with different story branches. This means alternative choices may be required to discover every available entry.

• Main story: Keep pushing the main story (2 scenes)

CHANGE

• Character screen: Not something major. Add some tabs to view stats and kids, and some minor changes to the UI.
• Dialogs in replay toggle: Turn off to just enjoy the replay.
• Improvement to translation: Both translations have many missing spots for translation, so I will go back and flag those areas. Also, if you see any mistranslation, feel free to DM me to have it corrected.
• The flappy minigame and the map were running pretty horrible on phones and weaker devices, optimized and should run much smoother now.
• And so many other small changes I can’t even keep track of them all.

• ONE scene for Tomoka: Follow the main story objective to get this new scene.
• ONE scene for Saeko: Auto unlock after reaching the latest part of Saeko story. Join her class in the morning to get this scene.
• ONE scene for Emi: Winner of the poll. Auto unlock after reaching the latest part of Emi story. Visit her at night on weekdays to get this scene.
• ALL the scenes for this update are non-story-related. That’s why I provide you with the solution to get each scene.
• Add more BGM: I wanted to add more BGMs but ultimately I changed this one to adding a new menu screen. Couldn’t find any good BGMs to add, sadly.

CHANGE

• Another option for Katsumi latest scene, so you can actually spare Aoi. No sex, but your conscience is clear
• Add dialogs to the replays: I want to add some dialogs during the replay part so it’s more immersive? I will try my best to actually write some things instead of adding random “mmmhhh ” or “ahhhh “ I finished adding new dialogs for all the scenes, but came back to delete around 2/3rd of them because I was not satisfied.
• Fix old scenes: Fix old scenes for the Prologue, no more noodle-arms. Change to the tentacles part to make it less weird.

BUGS

• No unfinished bugs.

It’s a little more than 2 weeks since I first released my game and for this version, I have done a lot of work, not just for new content but QoL stuff as well.
