The turn-based combat system gives fights more involvement than automatic outcomes, while training and progression provide a reason to engage with the surrounding systems. Side activities and alternative income sources also help prevent the entire game from becoming a repeated cycle of training and fighting.

Character quests add another layer of variety. Individual storylines can introduce their own requirements and progression, while relationship states and items can affect what becomes possible with particular characters.

The main weakness is complexity and progression clarity. Combining open-world navigation, combat, training, money, quests, relationships and character conditions creates many opportunities for the player to become unsure about what should happen next. Some quests can also depend on requirements that are less obvious than simply visiting the next location.
